Beyond Boundaries: Rotary Club of Mumbai South Leads the Charge Against Diabetes and Glaucoma in Health Outreach

The Rotary Club of Mumbai South, led by the esteemed Padmashree Rtn. Prof. Dr. Keiki R. Mehta, hosted a resounding success story this Saturday. At the Mehta International Eye Institute in Colaba, they held a comprehensive free screening camp for diabetes, glaucoma, blood pressure, and cataracts, specifically targeting the underprivileged communities in and around four major slums of South Mumbai: Ambedkar Nagar Transit Camp, Sasson Dock, Ganesh Murti Nagar, and Bhadwarh Park.

But this year’s camp went beyond its local focus. Two entire busloads of residents from the Dharavi slums also made the journey, eager to take advantage of the vital health services offered. The camp welcomed a diverse crowd, from daily wage earners to families with children, all united in their pursuit of well-being.The mission of the camp was twofold: empowerment and early detection. By raising awareness about diabetes and glaucoma, both silent and potentially devastating afflictions, the Rotary Club aimed to educate those most vulnerable. They underscored the critical role diabetes plays in national health and emphasized the insidious nature of glaucoma, dubbed the “silent thief of sight.”

But awareness was just the first step. The camp also sought to directly combat these illnesses by raising funds for diagnosis and treatment, particularly within the less fortunate communities. By providing readily accessible screening and early intervention, they hoped to control the spread of these diseases and improve the overall health of those often forgotten.

The event itself was graced by prominent figures, including Rotary dignitaries and South Mumbai MCGM Corporators Mrs. Harshita Narwekar and Adv. Makarand Narwekar. And to lend even greater weight to this noble initiative, the Honorable Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Shri Rahul Narwekar, inaugurated the camp. He commended both the Rotary Club of Mumbai South for its initiative and the tireless efforts of Padmashree Prof. Dr. Keiki Mehta’s unwavering dedication to serving the most vulnerable members of society.
In conclusion, the Rotary Club of Mumbai South’s recent health camp stands as a testament to the power of community, awareness, and proactive healthcare. By shining a light on silent killers and providing the means for early detection and treatment, they offer a beacon of hope to those who need it most.
