~The patient suffered from a rare condition known Posterior Ankle Impingement Syndrome (PAIS)~
Mumbai: A teamheaded by Dr. Girish Bhalerao, Consultant Orthopedic Joint Replacement Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, successfully helped a 30-year-old Chetan Jaiswal suffering from a rare condition called Posterior Ankle Impingement Syndrome, to stand on his feet again. The patient encountered ankle pain, difficulty in walking and standing up for a longer time, underwent an arthroscopic decompression with capsular repair keyhole surgery.
Life was beautiful until a 30Year-Old Chetan Jaiswal, a Mumbai Boy started experiencing severe ankle pain 8 years ago. This jolted him out of his normal life as he couldn’t do his daily activities with ease. Over a period of time, he also found it difficult to stand or walk, there was a loss of balance, and he even gained oodles of weight (105 Kg). The patient’s family was worried and desperately started looking out for solutions. However, the patient was referred to Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, wherein he got a new way of life.

The probable cause of it was walking on the forefoot. Moreover, the patient neglected it because of the excessive body weight as he weighed 105 kgs. His MRI revealed that there was a swelling of the posterior ankle and he complained of pain with forced flexion. Thus, the patient suffered from a condition called Posterior Ankle Impingement Syndrome (PAIS).”
Posterior ankle impingement can be described as a condition in which the patient experiences pain at the back of the ankle, owing to compression of the bone or soft tissue structures during activities that involve maximum ankle plantar flexion motion. It is mainly seen in ballet dancers and soccer players. Mr. Chetan is a CA by profession. Since the job required to sit continuously, he had a habit of sitting with his toes on the ground and heels in the air, and shaking it continuously.
“The patient underwent arthroscopic decompression with capsular repair keyhole surgery on 13th December 2019. Arthroscopic Posterior Ankle Decompression with Excision of OS Trigonum – extra (accessory) bone growth that sometimes develops behind the ankle bone (Talus) . The surgery lasted for one hour. The patient was discharged after 2 days. The advantages of this surgery are that there is minimal hospital stay, and the patient is given antibiotics and can move freely after the surgery. He was suggested a physiotherapy program that includes soft tissue therapy, stretching or mobilization of restricted joints. if Mr. Chetan wouldn’t opt for surgery chances were for Ankle arthritis, severe pain, because of which patient had a loss of ankle function. “My world turned upside-down after I suffered from that notorious ankle pain. This hampered my quality of life for the last six months as I was immobile.
