Mumbai: The Savio Hockey Club & Academy (SHC&A), Andheri will be organizing the first ‘Savio Super 5s’ hockey tournament, under the auspices of Hockey Maharashtra, at the St. Dominic Savio High School ground, Andheri (East) on November 19 and 20, 2021.
The tournament will consists of three events — Men and Women Open and Veterans (45 years and above) and the format of the tournament will be a league-cum-knockout basis.
“The city of Mumbai enjoys a rich hockey culture, but it has witnessed a decline of hockey events in the last couple of months. Hence, the SHC&A decided to organize this tournament and provide hockey players, both young and old, an opportunity to play their favourite sport,” said Olympian Darryl D’Souza, a member of the core committee.
“We are confident that the top teams from Mumbai and also several outstations outfits, from Pune and Kolhapur, would participate in the Savio Super 5s. Our aim is to make this an annual event,” the former Indian forward further stated.
Besides handsome trophies the winners of the Men and Women events will receive cash award of Rs 35,000 each and the runners-up will get Rs 20,000 each. In the Veterans category the winners and runners-up will be richer by Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. In addition prizes will be awarded to the ‘Player of the tournament’, Best goalkeeper and Best defender in all three categories.
Covid protocols such as strict masking policy, temperature checks, sanitization booths and social distancing norms will be enforced.
