Q & A with Mrs K S Jamali , Principal (Beacon High)

Q.In digital era, many students are dependable on Apps and other educational technology. Therefore, please share your views whether it is good for students?

A.We are living in an era which is largely impacted by the growth of technology. There is no way we can remain immune from technology or escape from it. Every child born since the millennium has had the internet as their constant companion.  Today, our younger generation especially the school going kids are using much education and learning apps which is having good and bad impact on the mental health of the kids. While these educational apps do help the students, it should be controlled both by the school as well as the parents. Between school and coaching centres, students today rarely get time for self-learning. While the earlier generations most entirely educated themselves at home, the children are relying more on the educational apps which acts as supplements to their learning material in the school. I do feel these educational apps are useful only if they are used with a specific purpose under the supervision by the parents.

Q:Self-Study era has finished because of technology era and how do you view this in the context of world science day?

Self-learning at home by the students is getting affected due to excess use of educational apps by the students. We are living in a digital era and all our major activities like booking of railway or air ticket, online money transfer, banking transactions, online buying and selling and many more things are done through the help of apps. Self-learning at home is getting hampered due to excess use of educational apps.

A:What is the role of the school in the present educational system where the children are gradually getting dependent on educational apps?

One of the most crucial aspects in the entire process of education is the role of the school in making the students   aware are about the positive and the negative aspect of using the educational apps. A growing awareness needs to be created about the excess use of educational apps by the students and the impact it will have on the mental well-being of the students.

Q.What are the advantages and the disadvantages of usage of such apps by the students?

A.One of the most frequent critiques of using education technology is that it lends itself to distraction from other lessons. Many students are quite computer savvy and find ways to use to use their school tablets or notebook computers to surf the web or play unrelated games. Since the period of childhood is not really effective at multi-tasking, students just end up getting distracted from their education. At the same time, there is no denying of the fact that children like to use educational apps for their study purposes. They are quite stimulating and fun. Therefore, the need of the hour is to maintain a balance between use of educational technology and the self-learning exercise.

Q.What is the role of the parents in the present educational scenario and how can they control the usage of educational apps by the children?

A.In the present era of use of educational apps, parents can play a very positive and significant role in ensuring the right use of the apps by the child for a limited period of time without having any impact on the self-study. This can be done under the supervision and the guidance of the parents. As a school, we are also using an exam learning app called Robomate for the students of grades nine and ten.
