Opening of Bharati Branch Post Office at Bharati Station, Antarctica, via Web Link by Shri. K. K. Sharma, Chief Postmaster General Maharashtra Circle on the 24th Foundation Day of NCPOR, Goa, on 05.04.2024.

Shri. K. K. Sharma, Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra Circle, inaugurated the ‘Bharati Branch Post Office’ at Bharati Station, Antarctica, today, via a web link connecting the remote location to the rest of the world. This momentous occasion coincided with the 24th Foundation Day of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa. A Postcard on Bharati Station was also released on the occasion. Shri. Amitabh Singh, Postmaster General, Mails & BD, Shri. Abhijeet Bansode, Director (HQ), Maharashtra Circle, Dr. Thaman Meloth, Director NCPOR, Goa, Dr. Shailendra Saini, Group Director (Antarctic Operation), Dr. Rahul Mohan, Group Director, Shri. R. P. Patil, Director Postal Services, Goa Region, Dr. Sudhir Jakhere, Asst. Postmaster General, Business Development, Maharashtra Circle, Shri S. V. L. N. Rao, Sr. Supdt, Post Offices, Goa Division, Shri Yadagiri G. Nyalapelli, Asstt. Director Postal Services (PSR), Maharashtra Circle and Team leader of Maitri Station and Bharati Station were present virtually during the event.

In his address at the inauguration ceremony, Shri. K. K, Sharma highlighted the historic significance of this milestone, noting that the Bharati Branch Post Office marks the third post office to be established in Antarctica. The first post office was established in 1984 at Dhakshin Gangotri, followed by another in 1990 at Maitri Station. The launch of the Bharati Branch Post Office after 40 years underscores the continued commitment of the postal fraternity to serve even the most remote corners of the globe. He commended the efforts of all involved in making this virtual launch possible and expressed confidence in the postmaster stationed at the Bharati Branch Post Office to facilitate meaningful connections through the exchange of letters with loved ones.

Furthermore, Shri. Sharma, expressed pride in being part of the Government of India’s journey of scientific exploration and reiterated the Postal Department’s commitment to supporting the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research in future endeavours.

The launch of the Bharati Branch Post Office via web link represents a significant advancement in bridging geographical barriers and facilitating communication and connectivity in Antarctica, furthering the mission of scientific exploration.
