Inauguration of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam expo by Hon’ble Speaker Shri Om Birla kicks off on the second day of NLC Bharat

June 16 2023: The second day of the National Legislators’ Conference Bharat (NLC Bharat) commenced with the inauguration of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Innovation Expo at the Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai, by the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, Shri. Om Birla. Other dignitaries present at the occasion were Shri. Chandrakant Patil, Hon’ble Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Higher and Technical Education, Textile Industry, Government of Maharashtra, Dr. RA Mashelkar, Padma Vibhushan and renowned scientist, Prof. Anil Gupta, Padma Shri, CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow, Shri. Anant Singhania, President, Indian Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry and CEO of JK Enterprises and Shri. Rahul V Karad, Founder, MIT School of Government and Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad and Convener of NLC Bharat.

The unique expo, in line with the theme of Bharat’s 75th year of independence, paid homage to the spirit of democracy. It showcased the nation’s true achievements – ‘Commendable Practices by Selected 75 MLAs on Constituency Development’, ‘75 Commendable Startups’, ‘75 Commendable Programmes of States and UTs’, and ‘75 Commendable Democratic Practices from other Democratic Countries in the World’.

The expo showcased commendable programs implemented by states and UTs, including the Jammu and Kashmir government’s initiative for the development and empowerment of Panchayats, the Mann Deshi Foundation’s construction of a shelter for cows in drought-affected Mann Taluka, Maharashtra, and Odisha’s “Advika” program aimed at enhancing education, health, and the overall well-being of adolescent girls, with support from UNICEF and UNFPA.

The noteworthy practices undertaken by MLAs in constituency development were enlightening. Dr. Danasari Anusuya (Seethakka) from Mulug, Telangana, created livelihood opportunities through farming, trade, and business while promoting education among the tribal population and fostering the development of impeccable healthcare infrastructure. Ms. K.K. Shailaja from Mattanur, Kannur, Kerala, introduced the unique Kerala COVID model, emphasizing comprehensive healthcare measures.

The startup and social innovations exhibited in the pavilions garnered immense appreciation from the guests. Ranging from affordable medical and diagnostic care innovations to social initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens, these exhibits showcased the scientific and pioneering efforts of the nation’s talented individuals. Notable innovations included the Anjali Mashelkar Foundation’s Sascan Medical, featuring a handheld device called OralScan for early detection of oral cancer, as well as an automated arecanut climbing and harvesting machine designed to enhance safety for harvesters. Pune-based KBCOLS Sciences Pvt. Ltd. promoted natural colors, advocating for reduced usage of harmful chemical colors across industries.

The Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Innovation Expo at NLC Bharat provided a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Bharat, embracing innovation, development, and the essence of democracy. It showcased the collective endeavors of individuals and organizations dedicated to making a positive impact on society. The expo left a lasting impression on all attendees, inspiring further strides toward progress and growth.

The expo has been set up at the three-day National Legislators’ Conference Bharat, being hosted at the Jio World Convention Centre. The Conference witnessed a gathering of around 2,000 participants from across the country, cutting across party lines.

There are several events scheduled on Day 2 of the Conference. This includes Thematic Parallel Sessions and Round Table discussions on a host of topics. In the evening, renowned performer and Padma Shri Usha Uthup will moderate ‘Ramp of Democracy’ in which legislators donning their traditional attire will walk the ramp.
