Diabetes Awareness and Screening Camp at World Diabetes Day Celebrations 2023

by Suman Gupta

Non-communicable diseases including diabetes, pre-diabetes and obesity are on an exponential growth trajectory in India, both urban and rural regions. Yet screening and awareness of the same are dismal. It has always been observed that screening drives have helped identify at least 20-30% new persons with diabetes, diagnosed for the first time. In fact, the International Diabetes Federation statistics clearly say that at least 50% of the people with diabetes are undiagnosed. The delay in diabetes is an expensive one with complications developing faster with uncontrolled glycemia. In view of this, regular screening and diabetes awareness drives are always very helpful.

Most diabetologists and physicians make it a point to arrange such camps around 14th of November every year to pledge their support to alleviate the suffering from diabetes. It is celebrated world over as the International Diabetes Day with the theme this year being ” Access to Diabetes Care”

Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital, located beautifully in the heart of Juhu, Mumbai conducted a week-long diabetes camp and awareness sessions for residents in and around the area under the guidance of Mr Rajesh shah, Mr Asim Shah and Ms Miloni Shah. The footfall was reasonable and many were able to avail the benefit of these sessions as well as the screening along with a free consultation with consultant diabetologist, Dr. Purvi Chawla and also a team of nutritionists. The pathology tests were offered with a very rapid turnaround too.

An interactive panel discussion with senior experts like Dr Arun Shah, , Dr Parul Shah, Dr Nitu Sabharwal and Dr Rajan Garach was also organised to address queries from the audience.

Living with diabetes can be made easy if simple lifestyle changes are implemented. A well-balanced meal with adequate protein and fibre intake and also a physically active life can help prevent chronic diseases and maintain great health.
