A brand new, air-conditioned toilet, built specifically for women, was installed at Dahisar, Check Naka, on Sunday, February 3rd, 2019, as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Banker, singer, and social activist Amruta Fadnavis, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the toilet. The toilet also has a sanitary pad vending machine, keeping in line with the Government’s goal of improving women’s welfare in the country.

One of the primary objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was to accomplish an open-defecation free (ODF) India by 2nd October, 2019, through the construction of household-owned and community-owned toilets, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In light of this, the installation of the air-conditioned toilet at Dahisar, Check Naka, is a small step forward towards achieving this goal.

While open-defecation may seem like a problem solely concerning rural India, the construction of the toilet at Dahisar is testament to the fact that poor sanitation is a common problem in rural and urban areas, alike. This stems from the sheer lack of clean public toilets in the country, and the dilapidated condition of the previously established ones. Though men find unhygienic, alternative solutions to this issue, like open-defecation, women acutely suffer from the scarcity of hygienic and well-maintained washrooms. The construction of this modern and clean washroom would aid in resolving the valid concerns of women around the locality.

The establishment of the toilet, along with its inauguration, was organized by BJP MLC, Chairman of Mumbai District Central Cooperative (MDCC) Bank Pravin Darekar.

Pravin Darekar, BJP MLC and Chairman of MDCC Bank, said, “It gives me great joy to be able to organise this incredible initiative, and the massive appreciation for it fills me with pride. The improvement of hygiene and sanitary conditions, especially for women, is a need of the hour in our country right now. Thus, I hope that the establishment of this air conditioned toilet, along with the sanitary pad vending machine, can be a small step forward, towards achieving that goal.”
