Potholed Roads And Accidents Spur 20 % Surge In Foot Fracture Cases During Monsoon

by Suman Gupta

During the monsoon, there has been a 20 percent rise in foot and ankle pain cases. This increase can be attributed to factors such as potholes, deteriorating road conditions, and inappropriate footwear. The number of foot sprain complaints specifically caused by potholes has noticeably surged on rainy days. In the outpatient department (OPD) of the hospital, an average of 3 to 4 patients seek treatment for ankle injuries and fractures daily. Neglecting timely treatment for these injuries can lead to lasting repercussions.

Youngsters tend to experience hand-foot fractures from falls at an early age, which can result in added pressure on their ankles, ligaments, and foot muscles. Nonetheless, extra precautions must be observed during monsoons when potholes become a prevalent hazard on roadways. Consequently, there is an elevated risk of bone fractures in the feet due to slipping while walking in wet conditions. The rainy season often leads to injuries affecting both feet and ankles.

Dr sGaurav Khera, Orthopedic Surgeon, based Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi said, “During the rainy season at the hospital’s trauma care center, there has been a significant influx of patients seeking treatment for ankle injuries resulting from slips and falls. Currently, 3 to 4 leg fracture patients come to the trauma care center of the hospital every day in the rainy season. Common complaints include ankle sprains, mild ligament injuries, ligament tears, and fractures. One is advised of certain precautions if there is any fracture or injury. Weight lifting is prohibited to avoid putting weight on the injured ankle. In some other severe cases, it may be necessary to fix the fracture with plates and screws. Hence, it takes more time for the patient to recover completely. It takes three weeks to heal from a fracture in the leg or hip. Physiotherapy is then advised to such patients. Timely treatment is very important. Otherwise, the injury can worsen leaving one in intense pain.”

Dr Gaurav added, “The presence of puddles on the roads is a direct consequence of rainwater build-up. These road hazards pose a heightened risk for drivers as they increase the chances of sustaining various injuries including spinal cord issues, back and hip pain, fear of bone fractures due to shocks, and exacerbated back pain mainly in the elderly population. Moreover, bike riders are more prone to developing conditions such as spondylosis, lumbar spondylosis, and sleep disc. Those diagnosed with sarcoidosis who also suffer from osteoporosis face an additional danger of experiencing back and spine-related discomfort.”

Dr. Dhananjay Parab, Orthopedic and Knee Replacement Surgeon, at Zynova Shalby Hospital, says, “Every day 2 to 3 patients visit the trauma care centre for ankle injuries due to slips and falls. But, currently, the number of patients has increased to 5 to 6 during the rainy season. Treatment of fractures requires a plaster cast and immobilizes the limb. During this period the patient is not allowed to move or can move at least for 3-4 weeks. In some other severe cases plates, rods and screws may be applied to the fractured area. In such cases, it takes more time for the patient to fully recover.”

Dr Vinod Agarwal, Orthopedic Surgeon, Lilavati Hospital Said, “leg fracture or back pain problem while driving during rainy season. The number of patients coming with complaints of leg fracture or back pain increases during monsoon. Prevent leg injury during the rainy season. Be careful when walking on slippery surfaces, and wear good shoes. Avoid using high heels and sandals. Be careful when walking on wet or uneven surfaces. Take note of the puddles, mud, and other obstacles that can cause one to slip or lose balance.Apart from this, the car seat should be kept properly so as not to injure the back due to road potholes while driving. Apart from this, it is necessary to take some rest after a few hours while driving.
