There is around a 40% rise in the age group above 60 in Mumbai

Mumbai: One of the most common problems faced by men above the age of 60 is an enlarged prostate (Benign prostatic hyperplasia). It is also known as prostate gland enlargement, a common condition that older men tend to suffer from. City doctors recommend opting for timely sonography, and consulting the doctor regarding urinary problems. Lifestyle modifications like avoiding caffeine and alcohol in the night, and emptying the bladder properly can also be helpful.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as an enlarged prostate can lead to urinary symptoms like blocking of the flow of urine out of the bladder, frequent urination and inability to empty the bladder. It can also lead to bladder, urinary tract or even kidney problems. The prostate gland produces the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra, which is the tube through which the urine passes out of one’s body.

When the patient suffers from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the prostate is larger than usual which squeezes the urethra. This can weaken the pee stream owing to which the patient may wake up several times at night to urinate. Now, the percentage of people with prostate enlargement problems have gone up, and it is essential to manage the problem with an appropriate line of treatment.

Dr Prashant Pattnaik, Urologist, ACI Cumballa Hill Hospital, Mumbai, said, “Prostate enlargement problem occurs in the age group of above 60-70. Now, since the longevity has increased, the number of enlarged prostate cases has surged up. In the late ’60s, around 40 %, and beyond 70, it is more than 50%. Many of them may not require surgery as drugs like alpha-blockers can treat BPH. Here, prevention is not possible as it is a natural process.”

“The symptoms of BPH are a frequent urge to urinate, increased frequency of urination at night and inability to empty the bladder.  If medications and lifestyle alterations do not improve your condition then the only option left is Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). It can be described as surgery to tackle urinary problems that one faces owing to the enlarged prostate. Consult the doctor and opt for timely sonography to overcome the problem. Lifestyle modifications like avoiding caffeine and alcohol in the night, and emptying the bladder properly can also be helpful,” concluded Dr. Santosh Palkar, Urologist Consultant, Zen Multi-Specialty Hospital, Chembur.
