13th RR LAKSHYA CUP 2022 – Powered by RR Global

by Suman Gupta

December 24, 2022, Mumbai : India’s Top 20 Air Rifle Shooters will fight it out at the 13th RR LAKSHYA CUP 2022 powered by RR Global on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at the Lakshya Shooting Club premises, Karnala Sports Academy, Panvel, Navi Mumbai.

The premier invitational shooting competition, which is conducted by Lakshya Shooting Club, the brainchild of Olympian, Arjuna Awardee, World Record Holder and ‘Dronacharya’ Suma Shirur, has only grown from strength-to-strength year after year.

Suma Shirur, who was recently conferred the prestigious Dronacharya Award and is also the Founder-President of Lakshya Shooting Club that was established in 2006,  said:  “I’m sure the shooters will embrace the challenge of top-notch shooting and enjoy the camaraderie over the two days including the Finals day on December 25.”

Among the star-studded shooters who will be seen in action over the weekend at the state-of-the-art shooting range in Navi Mumbai are:

  1. Rudrankksh Patil of Maharashtra, the ISSF President’s Cup winner and the reigning World Champion
  2. Parth Makhija of Delhi, Junior World Cup medallist.
  3. Kiran Jadhav of Navy, Asian Airgun Championship 2022 silver medallist
  4. Yukthi Rajendra of Karnataka, 2022 Senior & Junior National Champion 2022
  5. Ashi Chouksey of Madhya Pradesh, ISSF World Cup 2022 medallist
  6. Shriyanka Sadangi of Odisha, ISSF World Cup 2022 medallist

The Lakshya Cup has been the first of its kind in promoting gender equality. As Founder President of the Club, Suma first mooted the idea that men and women should shoot equal number of shots in a match. And, since the first edition of the Lakshya Cup in 2008, this competition has been following that. The move was vindicated when in December 2017, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) adopted the equal shots rule for both men and women.

Lakshya Shooting Club has had the distinction of being a Khelo India-accredited academy since October 2018. The RR Lakshya Cup, over the years, has also provided an ideal preparatory ground for the shooters going for international and national competitions. The respective 2018 & 2017 winners, Divyansh Singh Panwar of Rajasthan & Deepak Kumar of Air Force, had won the Tokyo Olympic Quota places as did the runner up in 2017, Anjum Moudgil. The 9th RR Lakshya Cup 2017 Junior gold medal winner, Shahu Mane, went on to win silver at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018.

Besides, this year’s chief guest is none other than Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Avani Lekhara, a trainee of Suma Shirur at Lakshya SC. The club will also honour Rudrankksh Patil, gold medallist at the Cairo World Championships earlier this year and Paris 2024 Quota place winner for the country. Needless to say, Patil is the defending champion of RR Lakshya Cup.

RR Global is a USD 1.25 Billion conglomerate and is one of the world’s largest and most prominent name in the electrical industry, is sponsoring the RR Lakshya Cup since 2017. The stakes have gone higher this year with the prize money, as the senior winner takes home ₹ 1.5 lakh apart from the top-of-the-line Capapie Jacket Trouser set.
