Maharashtra down Gujarat to qualify for main draw

Mumbai: Maharashtra produced another impressive performance to record 3-1 win against Gujarat in a Group-B league match of the West Zone qualifiers of the AIFF Sub-Junior National Football Championship 2019-20, and played at Railway Stadium, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

This was Maharashtra’s second successive win after their resounding 10-0 victory againsr Daman and Diu in the opening three-team group encounter. Maharashtra has now qualified for the main draw of the National championship to be played later this year. Goa wjo topped Group-A, is the second team to qualify for the final round from West Zone.

After a barren first half, Gujarat stunned the Maharashtra goal when Jay Sharma hit the target in the 50th minute. Maharashtra quickly restored parity when Mohammed Akib Ansari scored in the 51st minute. Seven minutes later, Venkat Navin struck the second to give Maharashtra the lead before Aryan Mahadeshwar scored the third in the 70th minute.
